What even is this?
Do you ever experience moments, both significant and mundane, where the thing you're doing seems to match up perfectly to the music you're listening to? Maybe it's a song you've heard countless times, but for whatever reason, in that particular moment, something clicked, and you forever associate that memory with that song, or that song with that memory? Or maybe, in one of those "where were you when 9/11 happened" moments, you remember what song was playing when something major was happening in your life.
I play music nearly all day long, and because of that, my life is filled with moments like these. Some of these moments are Major Life Events, and others are seemingly insignificant, but there are so many songs that are inseparable with certain memories. It's a wonderful thing, most of the time. In honor of turning 30 next week, I collected thirty of these songs and I put them in a playlist. I decided only to use songs that were actually released during the last ten years, and some songs aren't that significant to me anymore, but were at the time. These songs are from, for, and about the last ten years as I experienced them. And while I realize that this entire thing is total self-indulgence, maybe you'll listen, and maybe just maybe some of the songs will drum up some memories of your own. Maybe we share significant song memories. Maybe even our shadows know each other.
There are songs in my head for when I cried in the car with a friend after a wedding, returned the moving truck the day I moved to Baltimore, got into my relationship with Paul, biked along the Susquehanna River, came out to my family, got stranded in Iceland, camped out during the Harrisburg flood, woke up regularly in a house with no heat during the winter, got the news that my nephew Tony had been born three months prematurely. Because I am who I am, it's taking me a long time to finalize the playlist, but I decided to (trigger warning: more self-indulgence) create this blog as a space to write about handful of songs that I know definitively will be included on the playlist. I'm even lucky enough to have other friends who care very much about memories, music, and the morality of curating Spotify playlists, and one of them might contribute some to this blog later on.
I'm very excited about celebrating my 30th birthday, and especially happy to be sharing these songs with you. Hopefully the playlist will be done soon!
